Help those in need: Library fundraiser for the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association food pantry

It’s time again for the Library Staff Association fundraiser to benefit the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association food pantry. It’s been a difficult year economically speaking for most, and the HMAA and the people it serves are no exception.
Last year HMAA was able to serve 610 people who rely on the food pantry for their basic sustenance. The loss of federal funding this year has meant that the pantry must rely solely on donations. As a result, the HMAA has only been able to serve 290 people this year. Lack of funding during the past year has resulted in depleted food supplies, forcing the pantry to close its doors for several months due to a lack of rice to distribute. Winter is the season of greatest need, as families cannot rely on the harvest of their gardens during these months.
The library has held the fundraiser for more than a decade, raising thousands of dollars to purchase rice distributed to those in need through the HMAA, a social service agency that serves the local Hmong community by operating a food pantry and assisting in housing, employment and translating services. The agency also works with other area services to assist the local Hmong community.
Anyone is welcome to contribute to the library staff's project. Checks, made payable to McIntyre Library Staff Association, should be submitted by Dec. 16 to Dan Hillis in Room 5012 of McIntyre Library. Names of contributors will be included on a letter accompanying the donations. Contributors who wish to remain anonymous should make this preference known. Include an email address if you would like confirmation of the receipt of your contribution.
Because every penny goes to buying rice, even a small contribution can make a huge difference.

Relax in the library and you'll study more efficiently

Interlibrary Loan Glitch

A glitch has recently been reported to us regarding our Interlibrary Loan software. Notification emails are not getting sent to some people when article requests have been received by the McIntyre Library.

If you have sent article requests, please log into your ILLiad account here https://wisconsin.hosts.atlas-sys.com/illiad/GZE/logon.html , and select ‘View/Download Electronically Received Articles’. The majority of requests are filled within 48 hours, so if you have not received an email yet, there is a good chance the article has been delivered.

If you have not sent article requests in the past 30 days, please disregard this message.

This problem should be fixed soon, and please continuing using our Interlibrary Loan service.

Please contact John McCrackin, Interlibrary Loan Specialist (715-836-5377 mccracjm@uwec.edu) if you encounter any problems

Art installation project with St. John's University exhibit

Art students and faculty from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire are collaborating with students and faculty from St. John's University on a multimedia project called "Exchange of Silence."

The installations from both schools will be displayed from April 27-28 in the breezeway of McIntyre Library at UW-Eau Claire. UW-Eau Claire student installations will remain on display through May 6. An opening reception will be held at 7 p.m. April 28 in the library breezeway.

The project was developed by Jyl Kelley and Jason Lanka, assistant professors of art at UW-Eau Claire, and Min Kim Park, a visiting professor of art at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn. Students from video, sculpture and digital installation classes at both schools are working from similar themes to create installation pieces.

The title was inspired in part by contemporary artist John Cage's work. Lanka and Kelley said Cage created sound art that presented the contemporary world in a new perspective. Students participating in the collaboration are challenged to create new perspectives and interpretations of their experiences.
UW-Eau Claire students participating in the project are sophomore Phillip Schladweiler, Beloit; juniors Jacob Heitzig, Minneapolis, Minn.; Teresa Larrabee, Eau Claire; Laura Kelleher, Woodbury, Minn.; Kelsey Kocvara, De Forest; Jamie Nelson, Edina, Minn.; and Kelly Farrar, St. Louis Park, Minn.; and seniors Megan Byron, Blaine, Minn.; Mathias Hughey, Lodi; Travis Thorson, Ellsworth; Anna Havens, Monticello; Xiangyun Chen; Matthew Ludvigson, De Pere; and Lee Wegener, Hartland.

For more information, contact Jyl Kelley at kelleyja@uwec.edu, Jason Lanka at lankaja@uwec.edu or Min Kim Park at minkimpark@gmail.com.
