New Room Key and Equipment Checkout System


Last week we implemented a new and improved system for checking out study rooms, laptops, cameras and other equipment.

To reserve equipment and group study room keys go to the library website and click on "equipment checkout" on the left hand side of the page. This takes you to the Equipment Checkout page. Once there, click on new system. That will take you to our new Voyager reservation system. Remember, you will need your private id to reserve the equipment.

The reservation system is new and with all software changes problems surface. Please be patient with us as we learn how to make this work better for you. We are confident that soon you will see improvements and the process will work much smoother. One of the improvements that you will see immediately is that the checkout period for laptops is now one week. This was something students were asking for and now we can provide.

The history behind implementing the new system

The primary reason is that the old system was software that was created here years ago. It had become very difficult to work with and impossible to enhance. The current system has undergone so many small tweeks and changes that it would need an entire rewriting to fix many of its problems. Here is a good example of the problem that we experience. Because the software was created before the government changed the dates when we switch from Standard Time to Daylight Savings time, for the past two years every time this happens hundreds of students get overdue fines and notices that are not their fault. Another problem in the software was that we could not easily control how it registered and held group study rooms open. I’ll bet that you have been in the situation where a room was unoccupied that you could have used for just a short time, maybe half an hour. Well the old software would hold rooms open for about an hour prior to a reservation (I’m not sure of the time but I have seen this happen) and we could not over-ride that setting to let someone in to use the room until the people who made the reservation came to use the room. Finally, another reason we went with this system is because it is part of our circulation system and it brings all of our information together. You should be able to go into your library records and see what you have reservations for.

Apply Now for the Library Diversity Internship!

McIntyre Library seeks a junior or senior UW – Eau Claire student with an interest in librarianship and the ability to bring a diverse perspective to our library and our profession. The McIntyre Library Diversity Internship provides 10 hours per week of professional library work under the direction of a mentor librarian, and the intern will be paid $12.00 per hour.* The internship begins September 1, 2009 and ends May 14, 2010, with time off during the winter and spring breaks. The intern may choose to focus on one of the following areas of librarianship: Reference and Instruction, Collection Development, Education / Curricular Materials / School Librarianship, or Special Collections & Archives. The internship also offers the following benefits:

**Travel, room, board, and registration fee for a state or regional librarian conference.

**Travel, room, and board for visiting the UW – Madison and/or UW- Milwaukee Graduate Schools of Library and Information Science as a prospective student.

Valentine's Contest Winners

It was the fall of 2005; my freshman year at UWEC. Since I needed to take a fitness credit, and I ran competitively in high school, I decided to take jogging class. It was the second week of class. On nice days we ran the fitness trail around the track located behind McPhee. I was running behind two guys, when all of a sudden one of them tripped on a tree root and fell right down to the ground. There is a saying, “be careful what you wish for,” which was the case for Joseph. His intent was to turn and talk to me, wishing to make a good impression. Instead, I laughed to myself and kept running. At the end of class we were required to enter the indoor track and run until all of the students got in from the trail. Well, once inside I passed the same guy that had fallen, so I said “Come on!” He ran with me and we started to talk. I found out his name was Joe. Later that day I went on good old Facebook and added him as a friend. A year later we started dating. On December 31, 2007 he proposed, and we will be getting married on June 20, 2009. We always laugh when we think back on how he literally “fell head over heels” for me! There is a song which states: the Lord will provide, but sometimes the blessing is in disguise. That tree root turned out to be our blessing in disguise.

UWEC jogging class was the beginning of our journey to finding our soul mates. Therefore, we would be especially honored if we win the contest. Not many couples can say a tree root in jogging class was the start of something so amazing!

Student Art Display in the Library



Sara Ipsen and Erin Cyr have installed their final installation project for Art 382 in the main stairwell on the first floor of McIntyre Library. There are three pieces of photo-mosaics on fabric. Each are portraits of soldiers that are composites of many images. The installation will remain up until the end of the first two weeks of the new semester. Stop by and see this unique works of art.

Congratulations Graduating Student Staff



We are always so proud of the excellent students work here in McIntyre Library. They have excellent dedication and provide great service to their fellow students. All of the rest of the staff look upon their graduation with some sadness that they will be leaving us but with great happiness for their many accomplishments as students.

This semester we have decided that we need to recognize their scholarly accomplishments in a tangible way. We have begun a tradition of dedicating a book to each of our graduating student staff as a way of thanking them for their service and recognizing their educational achievement. Each will have their name placed on a bookplate in a book related to their area of study. This semester we had five graduates.

They are very busy people so we were only able to find a time when two of them could come and get their pictures taken with their books. Library fundraiser to buy rice

It's time again for McIntyre Library’s annual holiday giving project, which as in years past is a fundraiser to purchase rice for the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association (HMAA). The current economic crisis, combined with a worldwide rice shortage that has driven the cost of rice up by as much as 50 percent in recent months, makes the need great this year.

The HMAA is a social service agency that serves the local Hmong community in a number of ways. HMAA operates a food pantry and assists in housing, employment and translating services. It works in concert with other area services to assist our Hmong community.
For more than a decade, the McIntyre Library Staff Association has held the annual fundraiser through which voluntary contributions have totaled thousands of dollars. Last year the effort raised $485 to purchase 925 pounds of rice. Many families rely on this service for their basic sustenance.

The project is open to anyone wishing to contribute. Please make checks payable to: McIntyre Library Staff Association, and submit to Dan Hillis, Staff Association Treasurer, 5012 McIntyre Library, by Friday, Dec. 12. Names of contributors will be included on a card accompanying the donation and given to the HMAA. Contributors who wish to remain anonymous should indicate so. Story Times Are Back!

Education reference librarian Kati Tvaruzka leads a free monthly story time session for children attending UW-Eau Claire Children's Center, but the children and grandchildren of faculty, staff, students and the general public are also invited.

The 30-minute sessions are held at 10 a.m. on the last Tuesday of every month (September through April) in the Instructional Media Center.

Any UW-Eau Claire student interested in children's literature or reading aloud to young children, or anyone who would like to participate in this program, should contact Kati Tvaruzka at tvaruzke@uwec.edu or 715-836-4522.

Celebrate Banned Books Week by Checking Out the Censorship Exhibit in the IMC

McIntyre Library at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will display "Censorship in Schools and Libraries," a new exhibit opening Sept. 29.

The exhibit will be displayed in the Instructional Media Center on the lower level of McIntyre Library in observance of the American Library Association's Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read.

Banned Books Week (Sept. 27-Oct. 4) is observed during the last week of September each year. Observed since 1982, this annual event reminds Americans not to take democratic freedom for granted.

The exhibit, which will be on display through Dec. 19, was developed by the Long Island Coalition Against Censorship. Through narratives and illustrations, it chronicles incidents of censorship dating back to the 19th century, as well as frequently challenged books and creative works. Included are descriptions of the censorship of "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," "In the Night Kitchen," "The Catcher in the Rye," "The Color Purple," the novels of Judy Blume and Chris Crutcher, and most recently, the 2007 Newbery Prize winning novel "The Higher Power of Lucky" by Susan Patron.

Information on U.S. Supreme Court and lower court decisions is an integral part of the exhibit, including efforts to censor the popular Harry Potter children's books (Harry Potter books were burned in Alamagordo, N.M.) and the 2003 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court upholding the Children's Internet Protection Act.

UW-Milwaukee Public Historian to Discuss Photos from Japanese Internment Camps

Jasmine Alinder, assistant professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will present a lecture titled "Concentrating Smiles: Confronting the Photographic Archives of the Japanese American Incarceration."

Alinder's presentation will begin at 5:15 p.m. Oct. 10 in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center at UW-Eau Claire. The event is free and open to the public.

Alinder will speak about her research on photographic images of Japanese American internment camps during World War II. She will address problems that museum curators and historians face when incorporating these photographs in exhibitions and other public history venues. Exploring the tension between photographs depicting smiling Japanese Americans and contemporary historians' understanding of the incarceration, she will address the implications of keeping these problematic images confined to the archives and out of the public eye.

Co-coordinator of UW-Milwaukee's public history specialization, Alinder focuses her research on the history of photography. Her first book, "Moving Images: Photography and Japanese American Incarceration," will be published in February 2009 by the University of Illinois Press. Currently she is undertaking a new research project on photography and the law. Last year she organized a community conference on Milwaukee civil rights and is working on launching an educational Web site on the topic.

The lecture, which will be held in conjunction with Wisconsin Archives Month, is sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire McIntyre Library, the department of history, and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

EBSCOHost Academic Search, now bigger and better!

McIntyre Library has upgraded from EBSCO's Academic Search Elite database to the more robust Academic Search Premier database. The Premier database offers access to about 5000 more peer-reviewed journals and provides more full-text than the Elite database. Because the Academic Search databases cover a broad range of disciplines and publication types (including scholarly and popular journals and newspapers), they are often a good starting point for research. If you have questions about the new enhanced EBSCOHost database, please contact the reference desk at 836-3858.

Eau Claire Big Read Kickoff Saturday, April 5



Join us as we kick off the 2008 Eau Claire Big Read on Saturday, April 5 at 11am at LE Phillips Memorial Public Library. The event begins the month-long community reading and discussion of Dashiell Hammett's "The Maltese Falcon." Eau Claire city manager Mike Huggins and Julie Rivett, Hammett's granddaughter, will welcome participants and introduce the work. The public and media are invited to attend this free event and receive their complimentary copies of "The Maltese Falcon."



In addition to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, this year the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Foundation has made a substantial donation to help purchase copies of the book to distribute to the public.


The Big Read is a nationwide initiative of the NEA, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest, to encourage reading for all ages. The event asks community members to read and discuss their city's chosen book for a month. Eau Claire is one of only three cities in Wisconsin selected to receive a grant and participate this year.


"The Maltese Falcon" was chosen by a committee of event organizers from a list of 16 books. The book is a mystery, a thriller, a dark, dry comedy and a love story. Independent detective Samuel Spade is hired by a mysterious woman to help find her sister. The same night, his partner and a thug are killed. Suddenly, Spade's innocence is questioned. To prove his innocence, Spade risks danger and death. "The Maltese Falcon" has been said to have perfected the American private-eye genre.

Story Time This Wednesday!

Join Kati and kids from the Children's Center in the IMC for a 30 minute story program at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 26. In addition to fun movement activities, rhymes and songs, this month will feature great picture books that have all won awards for writing or illustration. Students, faculty, staff and community members are also invited to bring in their children. The storytime is geared for ages 2-5.

These storytime sessions are held the last Wednesday of each month (September through April). The IMC will still be open, but students should be aware that it will get quite loud. For more information contact Kati Tvaruzka at tvaruzke@uwec.edu.

The library will be opened limited hours over Spring Break starting on Friday, March 14 continuing through Monday, March 24:

Friday, March 14: 7:00am - 7:00pm
Saturday and Sunday March 15 and 16: Closed
Monday, March 17 - Friday, March 21: 7:30am - 4:30pm
Saturday and Sunday March 22 and 23: Closed
Monday, March 24: 7:30am - 1:00am

Service desks such as reference and periodicals will also have limited hours. Check out the hours page on the McIntyre Library web site for more information.

Student Worker Wins Student Leadership Award



Stephanie Schiefelbein, who works in the Interlibrary Loan department of McIntyre Library, was recognized February 21 at the 2008 Student Leadership Recognition Awards Ceremony. Stephanie received one of four Student Leadership Awards, which salutes students for their accomplishments. Stephanie is the president of Sigma Tau Delta - Theta Zeta, the English Honors Society, which one of the two Student Organization Awards. Stephanie is standing on the far right in the picture.

Stephanie is beginning her second year as a student worker at McIntyre Library and has worked in the Collection Development department before moving to the Interlibrary Loan department. She is a junior who has a double major, English Literature, Music - Liberal Arts, with a minor in Organizational Communication. Her primary instrument is the Clarinet. Earlier this week, Stephanie learned that the UW Eau Claire English Honors Society won a prestigious National Outstanding Chapter Award.

Credo Reference Collection Trial

We're exploring offering access to some of our reference works online. We are currently participating in a trial of Credo Reference Unlimited. The collection offers unlimited access to over 100 reference works (dictionaries, handbooks, encyclopedias, etc.), on campus and off. Here's a list of titles. Student Research Day Posters now available online

Student Research Day posters are now available through the online catalog (title search on "Student Research Day") and in Minds@UW(http://minds.wisconsin.edu/handle/1793/7198). Some fifty students who participated in the May 2007 Student Research Day agreed to participate in the Minds@UW project to digitize their research posters and make them available online. We look forward to seeing this valuable collection of student research grow in upcoming years!

SEARCH EXTENDED: Head, Library Systems

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire McIntyre Library seeks a Head, Library Systems, a probationary tenure track faculty position beginning August 1, 2008.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent
Server administration experience
Familiarity with SQL,Visual Basic
Professional experience managing an automated library system
Documented evidence of successful management of web and systems projects
Knowledge of library web design and scripting languages (Examples include HTML, XHTML, CSS, PHP, XML, JavaScript)
Demonstrated commitment to professional development and potential to meet the library’s tenure and promotion requirements
Excellent organizational , interpersonal and oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated commitment to public service

Preferred:
Academic library experience
In-depth understanding of technological trends and developments in academic libraries
Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software problems
Experience with SFX and MetaLib
Experience with ILLIAD and other electronic information loan software
Familiarity with remote patron authentication (EZProxy)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
In addition to supporting day-to-day library operations, this position is responsible for managing the information technology resources of the Library to maximize their positive impact on teaching, learning and research for the students, faculty and staff of the University. The Head, Library Systems oversees all aspects of the Library’s Integrated Library System (ILS - Endeavor/Ex Libris’ Voyager) and develops gateways to other information resources, including the Library’s electronic resources, institutional repositories and web presence. The position also provides technical and programming expertise in installing, troubleshooting, maintaining and upgrading system software and in performing critical operations such as extracting/loading data. Working closely with other librarians in a collegial environment, the successful candidate will provide vision and leadership in the investigation and implementation of emerging information technologies.

New to the library? Take a tour!

McIntyre Library offers free tours at the beginning of the 2008 spring semester. And some professors offer extra credit to students who take tours!

The tours are from February 4 through February 14 and last about 30 minutes.

Tour times are:
Mondays......... 5:30 pm
Tuesdays........ 3:00 pm
Wednesdays...... 10:00 am
Thursdays....... 12:00 pm

No need to register. Just meet in the Grand Corridor by the library entrance.

University of Hartford Photography Exhibit on Display

The library and the Department of Geography and Anthropology have collaborated to bring a exhibit of photographs of archeological sites provided by the University of Hartford Art School titled “Sanctuaries from Asia to the Americas.” This Minnie Goldenberg photography exhibit
celebrates the work of University of Hartford students Sarah Rutman, Jessica Hartke, Lenny Schwartz, Rosemary Ferreira and Dan Baird-Miller in Israel, Egypt, Mexico, and Peru. The exhibit is housed on the library's fourth and fifth floors. It will be on display throughout spring semester.

Tax Forms Available

U.S., WI, and MN tax forms are available at McIntyre Library. They are located on the 1st floor near the DVDs and music CDs. Tax materials are for personal use only, as supplies are limited. The Reference Desk has reproducible forms that can be duplicated for 10 cents each. Forms may be downloaded from Web sites using the following URLs:

Student Job in Government Publications Dept

The Government Publications Department of McIntyre Library is hiring a student employee. This is an entry level position that will begin with the spring semester. We will provide training. The main duties are the shelving and maintenance of the U.S. and Wisconsin document collections. The student will work 8 hours per week; preference will be given to work study applicants.
