Annual food pantry giving project underway.

Winter is the season of many celebrations, but it is also a season of great need, especially for families who rely on the harvest of their gardens for income and sustenance. McIntyre Library is holding its annual collection to benefit the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association rice pantry. Every donation, large or small, will help area families. Fourteen cents buys a pound of rice, and $20 feeds a family of 5 or 6 for a month. To contribute, please visit Http://libguides.uwec.edu/hmaagiving or drop your spare change in the donation box by the Library's new book shelf on the 1st floor.

274 voters registered at McIntyre Library!

In advance of the November 6 Presidential Election, librarians and staff at UW-Eau Claire’s McIntyre Library added voter registration to the list of services provided in the library. Eleven librarians and staff were trained and certified as Special Registration Deputies in the City of Eau Claire. Until the legal deadline of October 17, they provided the UW-Eau Claire campus with access to voter registration 8:30 am-midnight during week.

After October 17, Wisconsin state law requires that voters register at the office of the City Clerk in the city where they want to register, or at the polls on Election Day. Although the Special Registration Deputies at McIntyre Library can no longer help students, staff, and faculty to register to vote, the library can provide directions to anyone who needs to visit the Eau Claire City Clerk in order to register to vote.

With questions about voter registration at the McIntyre Library, contact Robin Miller, Research & Instruction Librarian, at millerob@uwec.edu or (715) 836-3132.

With questions about the laws related to voter registration and voter identification, visit:
Or contact the Eau Claire City Clerk at (715) 839-4912.

ILLiad updated and running

Our system for borrowing items from other libraries -- ILLiad -- has been updated, and is available for patron use. Thanks for your patience!

Libraries: a bridge across the Digital Divide

According to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one in three Americans do not have access to the Internet in their homes, and many cannot even afford a computer. Libraries -- particularly public libraries -- make the wealth of information available to anyone, regardless of income level, etc.
My favorite fact from this video is "More than 30 million people use libraries every year to further their education." And Internet access is central to those efforts.

Obesity and "the Weight of the Nation"

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that over one-third of adults (35.7%) and approximately 17% of children and adolescents are obese, and this rate is only expected to rise in the coming years. From May 7-9, over 1,200 people --public health researchers and practitioners, policy makers, and national partners devoted to obesity prevention and control -- gathered  in Washington D.C. for the "Weight of the Nation 2012" conference, with the goal of raising awareness of this epidemic, and sharing what can help to turn the situation around.
"Weight of the Nation" is also a documentary series and public health campaign collaboration by HBO, the Institute of Medicine, CDC, the National Institutes of Health, and made in partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente. At the center of this effort is a series of "four feature films that take an unflinching look at the severity of the obesity epidemic and its crippling effects on our health care system."

Each film is about an hour in length, well-written and engaging. Below is the first one to get you started.
