Try out Reference Universe

The library has a service designed to help you find background or introductory information on your research topics.

Reference Universe allows you to search the library’s expensive specialized electronic and print reference collection in a much deeper way. Whereas library catalog searches offer title or subject heading access, Reference Universe searches the complete back-of-the-book indexes and article titles to over 16,000 reference works--then matches those to our local holdings. Mind and Body Workout Room Update

We have now added a Stairmaster treadmill to the Mind & Body workout room. The treadmill is located in room 2024 just off the 2nd floor breezeway.

Thank you to all the students and staff who have made comments about the room and signed in on our use survey sheet. Based on the use we have seen and your positive comments we plan to keep the room open for the foreseeable future.

New Response to the Library Suggestion Box

Today I received a request to place trash cans in the group study rooms. Please see the The Library Suggestion Blog for my response.

Also, last week we had a suggestion to place a lamp on the puzzle table. We now have a lamp on that table to help out you puzzlers.

New Exercise Room in McIntyre Library

Here at McIntyre Library we are not only concerned with building strong minds but we are now offering a way for students, faculty and staff to develop strong bodies also! In collaboration with the Crest Fitness Center we have established the "Mind and Body Fitness" room on the second floor of McIntyre Library (rm L2025). This room will allow everyone to take a little break from their busy work day or study time to get their heart rate up and take care of their bodies while relieving the stress of a very busy schedule. We have a stationary bike and an elliptical trainer in the room. The bike has a tray so that you can keep reading or studying while you get some aerobic exercise. This is a test project to see if a library has a role to play in an overall campus wellness program. The room will remain open during library hours and will operate on a first come first serve basis.

Student Center Plans Available in McIntyre Library

A copy of the environmental impact statement for the proposed new student center is available in McIntyre Library's course reserve collection. It can be checked out at our circulation desk on the first floor by the main entrance to the library.

E-Reserve and Voyager Catalog have been fixed--thank you for your patience

Interested in what faculty are publishing here at UWEC? Don't want to search every database to find that information? If you answered yes to either of those two questions, the McIntyre Library has put together a webpage http://libguides.uwec.edu/uwecfeeds

Library Catalog Changes

The library catalog and related services are undergoing a transformation. We are currently working on the new catalog. There will be changes happening as we mold the catalog to better serve our users.

If you have any problems finding materials during this transition please call Reference at 715-836-3858 and we will return your call, or call Circulation at 715-836-3856 for help.

Several new databases now available

McIntyre Library's array of databases has seen several changes and additions this summer, as a result of ongoing efforts to best meet users' needs. Some databases are subscribed to by UW-Eau Claire, some are consortial purchases with other UW System libraries, and some come to us through the Department of Public Instruction's Badgerlink:

• Academic Search Complete: an upgrade of Academic Search Elite and Academic Search Premier that covers a broad range of disciplines and offers indexing and fulltext access to many more journals.
  
• Alt Health Watch: coverage of complementary, alternative and integrated approaches to health care
  
• Auto Repair Reference Center: Repair, care, recalls, specifications for autos dating back to 1945.
  
• Book Collection Nonfiction: thousands of fulltext nonfiction books. Available at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

• MLA Directory of Periodicals: detailed information on over 5,500 journals, with 4,400 currently indexed in the MLA International Bibliography
  
• Newspaper Source Plus: fulltext database of regional, national and international newspapers. Replaces ProQuest Newspapers.
  
• NoveList: a reader's advisory service for fiction. Also available for K-8 literature.
  
• Nursing Reference Center: patient and practice resources, evidence-based care sheets, drug information, continuing education and other nursing reference materials.
  
• Political Science Complete: journal, full-text reference books and conference proceddings covering political science and related topics.
  
• Professional Development Collection: Designed for professional educators, this database provides a highly specialized collection of nearly 520 high quality education journals, including more than 350 peer-reviewed titles
  
• Science Reference Center: full text for nearly 640 science encyclopedias, reference books, periodicals, etc. Topics covered include: biology, chemistry, earth & space science, environmental science, health & medicine, history of science, life science, physics, science & society, science as inquiry, scientists, technology and wildlife.
  
• SocINDEX with Full Text: covers broad range of social science disciplines, going back as far as 1895.

Test Drive 3 Great Databases!

The library has been given a trial of three great databases, and we encourage you to give them a test drive and let us know what you think. These database trials will be available until the end of July.

Academic Search Complete: the world's most valuable and comprehensive scholarly, multi-disciplinary full-text database, with more than 7,000 full-text periodicals, including nearly 6,000 peer-reviewed journals. In addition to full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 11,000 journals and a total of more than 11,600 publications including monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc. The database features PDF content going back as far as 1887, with the majority of full text titles in native (searchable) PDF format. Searchable cited references are provided for more than 1,000 journals.

Business Source Complete: the world's definitive scholarly business database, providing the leading collection of bibliographic and full text content. As part of the comprehensive coverage offered by this database, indexing and abstracts for the most important scholarly business journals back as far as 1886 are included. In addition to the searchable cited references provided for more than 1,200 journals.

Nursing Reference Center: a comprehensive reference tool designed to provide relevant clinical resources to nurses and other health care professionals, directly at the point-of-care. This database offers staff nurses, nurse administrators, nursing students, nurse faculty and hospital librarians the best available and most recent clinical evidence from thousands of full-text documents.

McIntyre Library In the News Again

Yesterday's Spectator mentioned the Library in Natalie Saeger's "Ask Anything" column. Natalie responded to a student's, Hunny Hunter's, question asking where were the best spots on campus to meet female students. It looks like the 4th floor of the Library is a great place to meet good looking and dedicated students. Natalie reminds Hunny that, "hat you don't want to meet just anyone; you want to meet someone with dedication."

Swine flu: all the latest news

Gender Neutral Restrooms

As some of you may have noticed McIntyre Library now has gender neutral restrooms located on the second floor right next to the elevators. These restrooms are designed to be private personal. Just remember to lock the doors when you use them.

For students, faculty, and staff at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the library has a new service available: Research Consultations. You can schedule to meet with a library staff member at your convenience using this online form.

What can you expect from a research consultation?

• assistance in selecting the best resources for your subject area
• strategies for searching specific databases
• help identifying and locating primary source materials
• developing research strategies
• help searching the web for relevant and reliable information
• explanations on how to gain access to materials held in other libraries

This service is available during normal business hours. Keep in mind that many research questions can be effectively answered at the McIntyre Library reference desk seven days a week without an appointment.
