The tours are from September 17 through October 11 and last about 25 minutes. Tour times are:

Come to the Authors Celebration!

University faculty and staff are cordially invited to the second annual Authors Celebration to celebrate our publishing accomplishments. The event will take place on Wednesday, October 3rd from 4:30 - 6:00 pm in the Tamarack Room in Davies Center. Brief remarks by Interim Associate Vice Chancellor Andrew Phillips at 5:00pm. The library will once again be joining LTS in it's yearly computer sale. The library will be selling the following:

The sale hours will be 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM on Thursday, September 20.
The location will be the Council Fire room in Davies Center.

New Database: Education Research Complete

The library now subscribes to Education Research Complete, the definitive online resource for education research. This database offers the world's largest and most complete collection of full text education journals covering scholarly research and information relating to topics from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,500 journals, as well as full text for more than 750 journals and more than 100 books and monographs.

20 Homecomings Exhibit in Library's Grand Corridor

An exhibit by university photographer Rick Mickelson chronicles the past 20 years of UW-Eau Claire Homecoming celebrations. The exhibit, entitled "20 Homecomings," is now on display in the McIntyre Library's Grand Corridor from Sept. 4 through this year's Homecoming, scheduled for Oct. 5-6. Approximately 40 prints, 16 inches by 20 inches in size, will be featured.

Mickelson's first day on the job at UW-Eau Claire was Homecoming Day 1988. Armed with a camera he had never used before and a long list of photos to be taken during the day, he quickly got his feet wet.

“Since then, Homecoming has been a special workday for me, and 2007 marks the completion of two decades' worth of documenting UW-Eau Claire Homecoming celebrations,” Mickelson said.

The exhibit is co-sponsored by the university's Learning and Technology Services, Alumni Association and Foster Gallery.

VSA Arts of Wisconsin Exhibit

The library will be hosting a travelling exhibit from VSA Arts of Wisconsin in the Grand Corridor and on the fifth floor during the month of August. The exhibit celebrates the art of adults with disabilities, and features award winners between 2003 - 2007. The exhibit is the result of a new collaboration between the library and the Heyde Center for the Arts in Chippewa Falls. They hosted the exhibit in July. The library will be working with the Heyde Center and other local art organizations to host additional exhibits in the coming months.

August Library Hours

The library will be open reduced hours in August (8/6 - 9/3) due to classes not being session. The hours are:

The library will also be closed on Labor Day (Monday, Spetember 3)

John Pollitz named new library director

John Pollitz has been named Director of Libraries and will assume the position on August 6. John comes to us from Oregon State University where he is the Associate University Librarian for Public Services and Innovative Technology. Prior to that he served as Library Director at St. Ambrose University. Welcome, John!

A very special thanks goes out to Chris Cox for his extraordinary leadership as Interim Director for the past several months. Chris will resume his position as Assistant Director in August.

We are currently offering a trail of Education Research Complete, an EBSCO database which offers the world's largest and most complete collection of full text education journals.
The database covers areas of curriculum instruction as well as administration, policy, funding, and related social issues, provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,730 journals

Books for Carol

A variety of books about horses, purchased in memory of Carol Lonning by the staff of the McIntyre Library, are now on display in Instructional Media Center. Lonning, who worked in Cataloging, passed away in January after a brief illness. The books about horses - fiction and nonfiction, for younger and older readers - were ordered for the IMC using money collected through staff donations. Carol was an avid lover of horses and riding and she often shared stories with us about her adventures. We hope that the books will inspire others to get outside this spring - either on a horse, or by doing something else that gives you pleasure. Enjoy!

Hietpas' work explores the presidential election in Nicaragua, 2006 as well as the lives of animals as a subculture.

Sergot’s work focuses on landscapes both abroad and of the region. Photos were taken during her fall semester abroad in the South of France, 2006 and in the Eau Claire area this spring.

Students Fund Two New Library Resources

The Information Technology Commission of the Student Senate recently voted to commit $19,000 in student technology fee monies to supplement library resources. This came about as a result of conversartions Chair Aaron Brewster and Interim Director Chris Cox have had regarding the library's flat materials budget (no increase since 2001), the increase in materials prices each year and our struggles to continue to offer the resources students and faculty need to conduct research in their disciplines.

The $19,000 will be used to fund two new databases. $6,000 will be used to fund the one-time archive fee for Arts & Science Collection V of JSTOR, adding an additional 120 journals to an already large archive of onine journals in a variety if disciplines. The other $13,000 will be used to fund the one-time archive fee for ArtStor, which is also being supplemented by funds fromthe departments of Art, History and Geography. ArtStor currently contains nearly 500,000 images documenting artistic traditions across all times and cultures and embraces architecture, painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts, and design as well as many other forms of visual and material culture. Images found in the database are of high quality, and can be linked in D2L, used and presentations, and as teaching materials, accessible 24/7.

Sam Weller, author of The Bradbury Chronicles: The Life of Ray Bradbury, will discuss his experiences with Bradbury and Fahrenheit 451. Weller is a professor at Columbia College and teaches the only college-level course in the US on the life and work of Ray Bradbury. Weller will discuss the time he spent with Bradbury, how the biography came to be, and the cultural relevance of Fahrenheit 451. There will be a question and answer session following.

Library Suggestion Blog Debuts

For years, suggestions, complaints and questions about library services have lived on a board on the first floor of the McIntyre Library. Suggestions were written on yellow sheets of paper and put in a suggestion box.

Starting today, each suggestion, complaint, or question you ask us about our services on the yellow form and from the electronic suggestion form will be posted here, online on the McIntyre Library Suggestion Blog. Using a blog will allow each entry to have it's own URL, allow it to be coded by subject so you can search for previous answers to your burning questions, and also allow you to comment on the response.

Open House for Remodeled Graduate & Non-traditional Student Study Area

Graduate and nontraditional students are invited to join us for an opening reception of our remodeled study area on Thursday, April 12 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The remodeled area is located on the fifth floor of the library in room 5029 and is reserved through the Circulation desk. All nontraditional students need a letter from Bonnie Isaacson to verify their status; graduate students must show their student ID. The room will be equiped with carrels, furniture and a microwave.

Fourth and Fifth Designated Quiet Study Floors

Based on student feedback from the survey conducted in February asking, "Which floor(s) should be silent?" we have designated both the fourth and fifth floor quiet study zones. 33% of you responded that both fourth and fifth should be silent, and another 42% of you chose either fourth or fifth floor.

If you plan to study in a group or converse with friends on either fourth of fifth, please use a group study room or other area. Also, please set your cell phone to vibrate. The quiet zone is “self-enforcing” (staff members are not available to enforce this policy).

We hope this will enhance your study experiences in McIntyre. Thanks for all your comments and feedback on this.

Foreign Students to Read at Storytime!

Six University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire foreign exchange students enrolled in ESL 201, "Integrated Skills," will serve as guest readers at the next monthly story time session held in the IMC. The students will each read a book they've selected and assist education librarian Kati Tvaruzka in leading additional activities, songs and dances when children from UW-Eau Claire's Children's Center next gather at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28.

The story time session will be extended this month and last about 45 minutes. Children and grandchildren of faculty, staff, students and the general public also are invited.

Fahrenheit 451 and Other Red Scare Movies of the '50s

McIntyre Library's own Dr. Jan Bogstad and Phil Kaveny will be discussing the content of a number of 1950s science fiction films in light of their implied "red scare" connnections at a Big Read program to be held at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library on Wednesday, March 28 from 7-8:30 pm. The program will be held in the library's Eau Claire Room in the lower level.

Critics have argued that films like War of the Worlds, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and The Day the Earth Stood Still, to name a few, include many references to American anxieties about the Russians and the potential for atomic war. This presentation will document that perspective with film clips and discussion of the social setting in Post-World-War II America.

Plasma Screens Installed

Over break, two large plasma screens acquired form the College of Business will be installed: one right outside the library in the Grand Corridor to the left of the metal gates, and another to the left of the New Book Shelf. Both screens will currently be used to notify students about events, new products and services, library construction or changes, to share research tips, etc. Eventually we plan to use the screen near the New Book Shelf as an interactive floor map, so you will be able to find the room or area of the library you are loking for more easily.

Grad Study Upgrades

Over the break, the Graduate Study on fifth floor (5029) will be rearranged, removing some of the carrels and offering more open space for upholstered furniture and possibly a study table to be installed. Nontraditional students will also be allowed to use the space when it reopens after break. The room will also feature a microwave and coffee maker, as well as a bulletin board where you can leave messages for friends and colleagues.

We hope these upgrades will result in greater use of the room. If you are a graduate students and you are interested in using the room, visit the Circulation Desk to get the combination. Nontraditional students should see Bonnie Isaacson, Nontraditional Student Advisor, for information on accessing the room. All students will be asked to read and sign an acceptable use policy.

Big Read Kick Off: Free books, fire trucks and more!

Eau Claire's Big Read, featuring Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, begins Saturday, March 10, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library. Eau Claire fire trucks will deliver free copies of Ray Bradbury’s book Fahrenheit 451 to the library. Crowd-pleasing author Mike Perry will get us fired up and City Manager Mike Huggins will be on hand to officially ignite the Eau Claire Big Read. This is the first in a long list of events scheduled throughout the spring to celebrate the book, the issues raised in the book, and a community coming together to share a book. Be a part of it! Sunshine Week Live Webcast

Take part in Sunshine Week 2007 with Closed Doors; Open Democracies, a national dialogue on public access to government information and accountability that will be webcast to sites around the country from the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The library will be showing this webcast on Monday, March 12 from Noon - 1:30pm in L2023 on the 2nd floor; this event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served. Poll III: A Coffee Cart in the Library

McIntyre Library is always looking for ways to be more open and inviting, and one way that libraries across the country have enhanced their environments was through the installation of a coffee cart or cafe. This week's poll asks you whether the McIntyre Library should have a coffee cart, what hours it should be open, and what it should serve.

Thank you all so much for your feedback thus far regarding a possible library book drop on upper campus and the choice of a silent study floor. While the library book drop poll was not conclusive, the response to the silent study floor question was overwhelming. We'll be announcing the results of both polls and also which floor(s) will be silent later this week, based on your feedback.

Black History Month Exhibit

Check out (literally) our exhibit of materials written by and about black artists, scientists and scholars on the library's first floor next to the New Book Shelf. Materials in the display are there to be borrowed. The exhibit, put together in honor of Black History Month, will be there for the entire month of February.

U.S., WI., and MN. tax forms are available at McIntyre Library. The location has changed to 1st floor near the music CDs. Tax materials are for personal use only, as supplies are limited. Special Collections Reopens

We are pleased to announce that Special Collections and University Archives is now open in our newly renovated space on the library's 5th floor. The library is pleased to announce the purchase of MarketLine from Datamonitor. MarketLine offers concise profiles of 10,000 companies, 2,500 industries, and 100 countries. It also offers 2,500 company SWOT analyses and is constantly updated with the latest business and industry news. You can access the database by typing in the name from the "Find Resource" link under the"Research" category.

Free EndNote Access with Web of Science

Web of Science now allows you save and organize citations using a web-based version of EndNote built into their product. Try it out by registering at http://portal.isiknowledge.com.

Voyager Catalog Unavailable Jan 2-3

The McIntyre library Voyager catalog is scheduled to be down for a version upgrade Jan. 2 - 3. We will be upgrading from version 5 to version 6.

All other University of Wisconsin campuses will be upgrading during the period of Jan. 2 - Jan 15, which will affect Universal Borrowing. UB will be disabled Dec. 26 - Jan. 3, after which each campus will be re-enabled once that campus has upgraded to version 6.

Library Service Offerings Over Holiday Break

Here are the library's general and service hours during the week between Christmas and New Years (December 26-29)

The library will be open 7:30am - 4:30pm December 26-29.

Interlibrary loan and DE requests for materials from other libraries will not be processed during this week. They will be processed again starting on January 2.

The Reference Desk will be open from 10am - 2pm during this week.

The Periodicals Office will be open from 9 - 11am during this week.

Special Collections will be closed starting December 21st - January 21st as they move to their new location on the Fifth floor.

The library will be closed December 23, 24, 25 and December 30, 31 and January 1st. Have a safe and happy holiday!

New Resources: Knovel and Historical Statistics of the United States

The library is pleased to offer access to two new electronic resources:

Knovel Library: Collection of full text reference books and databases from more than 30 Sci-Tech publishers and professional societies including, McGraw Hill, John Wiley, Elsevier, Springer, Industrial Press, American Institute of Chemical Engineers and American Society of Mechanical Engineers covering 18 industrially important Subject Areas in the fields of Chemistry and the Life Sciences; Materials; and Engineering. All sources are full text in PDF format, and many include interactive tables,, graphs and live equations allowing you analyze the data you find.

Historical Statistics of the United States: definitive source of statistics and data about the United States and a key resource for American history research from Colonial times to the present. Includes statistics from over 1,000 sources covering data on social, behavioral, humanistic, and natural sciences including history, economics, government, finance, sociology, demography, education, law, natural resources, climate, religion, international migration, and trade.

It's a Jungle in Here! - December 20 Storytime Session

Join Kati and kids from the Children's Center in the IMC for a 30 minute story program at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 20. The theme for the December session will be "Jungle Jamboree." Students, faculty, staff and community members are also invited to bring in their children. The storytime is geared for ages 2-4.

These storytime sessions are held the last Wednesday of each month. (The December session was moved up a week due to the end of the semester.) The IMC will still be open, but students should be aware that it will get quite loud. For more information contact Kati Tvaruzka, Education Reference Librarian, at tvaruzke@uwec.edu.

Reading Partners Reading Chain on Display in IMC

UWEC Reading Partners have created a reading chain and it is now on display in the IMC. Each link on the paper chain represents a book that was shared between a UWEC student volunteer and a young child. Some of the students actually meet here in the library to read to their young partner! Stop by and see the chain and watch it grow over the next few weeks. "Experiments with Collage" on display

Experiments with Collage, a collection of works from UWEC Art and Design Students, will be on display on the fourth floor of the library until December 19.

This group exhibition explores the ideas of collage and juxtaposition through material, process, and concept. Thirteen students from ART 402: Advanced Two-Dimensional Studio created work for this exhibition. Exhibiting artists are: Clayton Brice, Reyna Collura, Rick Conlin, Joan Crane, Samantha Gund, Theo Howard, Amy Krause, Kim Peterson, Aaron Schasse, Andrea Seeley, Kathleen Spaeth, Zach Stensen, and Sara Stone.

Extended Hours During Pre-Finals & Finals Week & FREE Coffee!

McIntyre Library will be open 24 hours the week before and of finals again this semester.

Preschool Storytime Session Wednesday

A storytime session will be held this Wednesday for the Children's Center from 10-10:30am in the Instructional Media Center (IMC). Students with children are also invited to attend. The theme for this month is "Silly Stories."

Faculty Scholarship Exhibit

An exhibit of posters illustrating faculty and staff publications from the previous year will be on display in the library's Grand Corridor from now through Winter Break. The posters, presented by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, were originally displayed at the ORSP/McIntyre Library-sponsored Authors Celebration in October. The event featured 40 recently published faculty and staff members and celebrated the publishing accomplishments of all university faculty and staff.

Fractured Fairytales Display in IMC

A new display of children's books featuring fractured fairytales is in the display case in the IMC. All materials may be checked out.

Applications Now Being Accepted for Director of Libraries

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is currently accepting applications for the Director of Libraries position. The position is a limited appointment to begin July 1, 2007. The individual will hold a concurrent tenured faculty position at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor in the McIntyre Library. Burials, Baths, and Beyond Exhibit Opens

Thursday, November 2 marks the opening of "Burials, Baths, and Beyond," an exhibit of photographs on loan from the University of Hartford Art School depicting archeological sites from Israel and Spain. The exhibit will be housed on the library's fourth and fifth floors for the month of November, with a sample of the works displayed in the library's Grand Corridor until Friday, November 10. The exhibit is mounted in collaboration with the Departments of Geography and Anthropology, and is displayed in coordination with a visit from Dr. Richard Freund, who will also be speaking a 7:00 pm in Phillips Hall 007 on November 2. A reception will also be held to celebrate the exhibit's opening at 2:30pm on November 2, with comments from Dr. Richard Freund and Interim Director of Libraries Christopher Cox at 3pm. Refreshments will be served.

The library would like to thank Professor Harry Jol for approaching us with this opportunity, and Tom Wagener for his assistance in mounting the exhibit.

Chancellor Honored with Book

In honor of his recent inauguration, Interim Director Christopher Cox presented Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich with A Pictorial Biography of Bulgakov(http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/results.asp?WRD=pictorial+history+bulgakov&z=y&cds2Pid=9481) this past Monday, October 23, 2006. Bulgakov was an early twentieth century novelist and playwright and one of the Chancellor's favorite authors.

The library also will add a book of the Chancellor's choice to the McIntyre Library Collection. The book will be affixed with a bookplate which will note that he chose the book and that it was added to the collection in celebration of his inauguration.

We congratulate Brian Levin-Stankevich on becoming the seventh chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and offer him best wishes and continued success in this new endeavor.

Spectator Distribution Point in the Library

The Spectator is now available in the library! You can find copies of the latest issues to take and peruse by the brick wall visible from the river entrance under the large library poster touting our services.

New issue of Off the Shelf

Check out the Fall 2006 issue of the Off the Shelf! Highlights include a new guest column feature, this time by Chuck Tomkovick, Professor of Marketing, Bob's final "View from the Third Floor" column, and an interesting sample of strangely named government documents.

Children's Center Story Time Program

A storytime session will be held for the Children's Center the last Wednesday of each month from 10-10:30am in the Instructional Media Center (IMC). Students are invited to participate in order to learn how to perform a preschool-aged story program. The IMC will still be open, but students should be aware that there may be some noise.

Christopher Cox Named Interim Director

Christopher Cox, Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of Libraries, has been named Interim Director of Libraries.

Cox joined the faculty in August 2004 after serving as Reference/Instruction Librarian at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. Previous to that he worked at the Moffat Library of Washingtonville in New York.

Cox has written numerous articles and book chapters on diverse technological topics such as streaming media, course management systems, and virtual reference. His work has been published in College & Research Libraries News, Computers in Libraries and portal: Libraries and the Academy. He currently serves as editor of Internet Reference Services Quarterly, as column editor for College and Undergraduate Libraries, and is a frequent reviewer for Choice Magazine.

Cox is a proud member of both the American Library Association (ALA) and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), serving on various committees including the AASL/ACRL Interdivisional Committee on Information Literacy.

Happy Retirement, Bob!

Robert Rose, Director of Libraries at UW-Eau Claire for over eight years, retired last week (see University press release).

Bob led the library in an exemplary fashion through a period of transformation. He oversaw the changeover to a new integrated library system and weathered periodical cancellations, budget and staff cuts all with intelligence and grace, and never allowed the library’s quality of service to be diminished. His mark can be seen in the many changes which have taken place within the physical library building, including the installation of artwork, the addition of upholstered seating, the creation of an information literacy lab, the move and remodel of the IMC and the most recent reconfiguration of the library’s stacks and construction of a new Special Collections and Archives area on the library’s fifth floor. Many of these changes were undertaken at the behest of the library’s users, who he often championed and always listened to. This is no more obvious than in the improvements he made on behalf of disabled users, and the family friendly study room he created for our students with children.

Congratulations, Bob! We'll miss you!

Janis Amatuzio and Katherine Schneider

Amatuzio, MD, author of Forever Ours and known as the "compassionate coroner" is the founder and president of Midwest Forensic Pathology, P.A. She serves as Coroner and provides forensic pathology services for several counties in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Schneider's book To the Left of Inspiration: Adventures in Living with Disabilities was published by Dog Ear Publishing in March of 2006. A UW-Eau Claire senior psychology emerita, Schneider received her bachelor of science in psychology from Michigan State and her doctorate in clinical psychology from Purdue University.

Bill Holm and Cathy Sultan

In a compact collection of two dozen short essays and prose poems Bill Holm explores his life and, by extension, our lives, and how they flow together to make the life of a community, and then a country, and then a world.

Sultan, a native of Washington, D.C. lived in Beirut, Lebanon, from 1969 to 1983. Her memoir A Beirut Heart: One Woman's War, published by Scarletta Press in November 2005, recounts her family's survival during the Lebanese civil war. In her second book, Israel and Palestinian Voices: A Dialogue with Both Sides, published by Scarletta Press in March 2006, Cathy attempts to open eyes to the human realities of life in Israel-Palestine through interviews she conducted in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Patricia Hampl Reading Wednesday, October 18

There will be a reading by Patricia Hampl on Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00pm in the library's second floor breezeway.

Hampl (http://english.cla.umn.edu/faculty/hampl/hampl.htm) is Regents’ Professor at the University of Minnesota and the author of three highly acclaimed memoirs-- A Romantic Education (1981), Virgin Time: In Search of the Contemplative Life (1992), and I Could Tell You Stories: Sojourns in the Land of Memory (1999)--all of which were selected as New York Times Notable Books of the year, as well as two volumes of poetry. She is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship (the so-called “genius” grant) along with fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts (twice, in poetry and prose), Bush Foundation, Ingram Merrill Foundation, and Djerassi Foundation. Her work has appeared in many publications, including The New Yorker, Paris Review, New York Times Book Review, Ploughshares, Antaeus and Kenyon Review.

Marge Piercy will read from her forthcoming eighteenth poetry collection and from her recent memoir Sleeping with Cats next Tuesday, 10/17 at 7:00 p.m. in Davies Theater. Piercy is also the author of seventeen novels including the New York Times bestseller Gone To Soldiers, the national bestseller The Longings of Women, and the classic Woman on the Edge of Time.

Special Collections Hours Change

During the 2006-2007 academic year, Special Collections will not offer extended hours on Tuesday evenings, as we have done for the past several years. Instead, we will be open Sunday afternoons from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. when classes are in session (Fall/Spring semesters). Our extended evening hours were very poorly attended, and we are hopeful that both university and community users will find the Sunday afternoon hours more appealing.

Graphic Arts Student Presents Photography Exhibit

Aaron Schasse, a senior graphic design student at UW-Eau Claire, will be presenting an exhibit entitled "Costa Rica: Inside and Out," in the library's Grand Corridor during the month of October (October 2 - 27). The exhibit includes photographs and short video poems from Schasse's travels to San Jose in 2005 and is the result of a student/faculty collaborative grant project with Cara Tomlinson, Assistant Professor of Art and Sean Regan, Assistant Professor of Art History. The exhibit is also presented in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Schasse will be having an opening reception on October 5 at 6pm in the Grand Corridor for those interested in meeting him and discussion his work.

ORSP, Academic Affairs and Library Co-Sponsor Authors Celebration

On Tuesday, October 3 from 4:30-6:00 p.m., ORSP, Academic Affairs and the library are co-sponsoring an Authors Celebration in the Tamarack Room in Davies Center. This is a social event celebrating the publishing accomplishments of all university staff, offering a venue for all to discuss their scholarly pursuits and highlighting a particular publication. A number of authors will have their works highlighted in the form of displays which will also be posted in McIntyre Library following the celebration. Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich will offer brief remarks, and there will be food and drinks, and conversation. We hope you will join us.

Buy a Used Laptop at the Laptop Auction

The McIntyre Library allows students to check out laptops. And each year we replace old laptops with new laptops. This year we have 29 used laptops, accessories, and laptop cases to auction off. The auction will be an online auction, with all bidding occuring on our online auction page.

United Way Basket Raffle

The library is again donating a basket to raise money for the United Way this year. The basket includes a lot of great items such as books, movies, music, gift certificates and other assorted items. A complete list of prizes is available at http://www.uwec.edu/Library/aboutus/unitedwaybasket.pdf.

Tickets, $1.00 each or 6 tickets for $5.00, will be available for purchase starting Friday, September 15 during the basket's appearance on the campus mall from 11am - 1pm. You can also purchase tickets at the McIntyre Library Reference Desk starting Monday, September 18 between 8am and 4:30pm M-F.

The drawing for winners of all the United Way theme baskets will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 29 at the United Way Booth across from the Davies Service Center. You need not be present to win.

New Lab Opens for Business

The library's newest lab, L1033, opened last last week. Located on the first floor behind the Reference Desk, it includes 30 workstations and seats 40. The library is primarily used for information literacy sessions taught by librarians as part of classes, but is also reserveable by faculty through the Reference Desk and is an open access lab when classes are not in session.

Video Presentation for September 11 Anniversary

"Democracy's Challenge, Reclaiming the Public's Role," a September 11 video presentation, will be held in the new library lab, L 1033, from 11am-1 p.m.

This presentation is part of the September Project, which encourages libraries to host free civic events about freedom, democracy, and citizenship in remembrance of September 11th.

Welcome Back New Students!

Welcome back to a new academic year at UW-Eau Claire. We've been making a lot of changes while you've been gone.

• Check out the new lab on the First Floor near the Reference collection. It will be used for library instructions sessions and other classes, as well as be an open access lab when classes aren't in session.
• Our DVD Collection is available for browsing - now on the First Floor near the CDs.
• A newly redesigned web site. If you have comments or questions, let us know.
• Construction continues on the Second, Fourth and Fifth floors. Stacks have been configured on both floors, allowing us to build two new group studies on Fourth and to move Special Collections from Old Library to Fifth. Construction should be completed by mid-October throughout the building.

Library Closed Labor Day Weekend

The library will be closed this Saturday, Sunday and Monday, September 2, 3 and 4, for Labor Day Weekend. The library will begin regular hours on Tuesday, September 5.

Wojahn Publishes Children's Book

Becky Wojahn, Reference & Education Librarian, recently published a children's book, Evan Early. The book is illustrated by UW-Eau Claire art professor Ned Gannon and is published by Woodbine House. You can buy a copy at Amazon. For more information, see also Rob Reid's article in Volume One.

Damon Campbell Wins Award

Damon Campbell, a chemistry major and library student worker in the collection development department, received the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Student Award at an award luncheon May 11 in Davies Center. The ceremony was sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Alumni Association. Congratulations, Damon!

Damon will be graduating this year and moving on to study medicine at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He sums up his experiences working in the library as follows:

"Coming to UW-Eau Claire was the logical step towards continuing on with my goal of becoming a medical doctor. Upon arriving on campus my first year, I quickly set out to find employment so that I would be able to afford my education. Within the first few weeks, I was offered and accepted employment at an on campus cafeteria and at the McIntyre Library.

My first semester of college was a hectic time, balancing twenty credits, finishing a needlework tapestry piece for each of my grandmothers, and working 21 hours a week at my two jobs. It was during this time that I planned out the rest of my college courses and determined that I could graduate in three years with a chemistry degree if I took a considerable amount of credits each semester and continued to work hard.

This May I will be graduating after only three years with an A.C.S. Comprehensive Chemistry degree, a 3.98 GPA, two publications in respected scientific journals for biochemistry research I have done while an undergraduate, and an acceptance letter to the UW Medical School in Madison. Additionally, I had the honor of being the 2005-2006 “College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Student.” I will always look back on (most) of my college career with fond memories, especially at my time spent working the McIntyre Library."

24 Hours and Free Coffee!

Student Senate has worked with McIntyre Library to offer extended hours during the week before and the week of finals. The UW-Eau Claire French Club, Circle K and the library administration, faculty and staff will treat students studying in the library to FREE COFFEE. Here are the details:

May 8 – 13
Library opens Sunday morning 7:30 a.m. and stays open continuously until midnight Friday. Open Saturday May 13 from 7:30am –midnight.

May 14-19
Library opens Sunday morning 7:30 a.m. and stays open continuously until 7 p.m. Friday. CLOSED Saturday and Sunday May 20, 21.

FREE COFFEE is available to hardworking students studying in McIntyre Library from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday nights, May 14-17th.
