Stop in the library's Grand Corridor to view the jazz-related artwork.

"The purpose of this Jazz Art Crawl is to provide a visual means to interpret and celebrate jazz music. The Art Crawl is being promoted as part of the larger Eau Claire Jazz Festival throughout Wisconsin, encouraging visitors to attend and view the art. Early computer shutdown and power outage this weekend

Due to the scheduled electrical outage, all library computers will be TURNED OFF at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 2, one hour earlier than the library closes.

We will reopen on Sunday, April 3, at 6 p.m.

Used books on sale in the library

McIntyre Library has been withdrawing books from our collection that are either duplicates or outdated and unused. Look for some of these books to appear on our McIntyre Library Book Sale shelves, located near the  L1033 lab.

Suggested price is $1.00 for hardcover, $ .50 for paperbacks. We trust that you will pay for the books you take. Funds raised will help us purchase new books.

Haiku contest celebration

The contest winners read their winning entries at the celebration on February 9. The winner of the contest was Dr. Bill Benson, professor emeritus of art. Honorable mentions include sophomore Jessica Olson, Bloomington, Minn., and Dr. Susan M. Harrison, associate professor of mathematics. Other honorable mentions included community members. The University Writing Center, the University Bookstore and McIntyre Library sponsored the contest. .

Universal Borrowing service has resumed. Books and other materials from UW campus libraries may again be ordered through Universal Borrowing. These items usually arrive faster than when ordered through Interlibrary Loan.

Last day to support $$ for Rice Project

It's time again for the McIntyre Library annual holiday giving project, and as in years past, we will be raising funds to purchase rice for the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association (HMAA) food pantry.

The library has held the fundraiser for more than a decade, raising thousands of dollars to purchase rice distributed to those in need through the HMAA.

The HMAA is a social service agency that serves the local Hmong community by operating a food pantry and assisting in housing, employment and translating services. The agency also works with other area services to assist the local Hmong community.

More than 160 families rely on the food pantry for their basic sustenance. However, decreased funding during the past year has resulted in depleted food supplies, forcing the pantry to close its doors for several months due to a lack of rice to distribute. Winter is the season of greatest need, as families cannot rely on the harvest of their gardens during these months.

If you choose to participate, please make checks payable to McIntyre Library Staff Association, and submit by Dec. 10 to Dan Hillis in Room 5012 of McIntyre Library. Names of contributors will be included on a card accompanying the donation that will be given to the HMAA. Contributors who want to be anonymous should indicate so. Please include an email address if you would like confirmation of the receipt of your contribution.
Anyone is welcome to contribute to the library staff's project.

Reward Offered for Stolen Artwork

Staff members in the McIntyre Library at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire are seeking information regarding student-created artwork that apparently has been stolen from the library.

The artwork had been on display on the library's first and third floors. Staff members noticed two of the art pieces missing on Nov. 9 and another on Nov. 17.

A reward is being offered for the return or any information leading to the return of the artwork. Information regarding the missing pieces should be reported to John Pollitz, UW-Eau Claire director of libraries, at 715-836-4827 or pollitjh@uwec.edu or the UW-Eau Claire Police at 715-836-2222.

A brief, three-line, seventeen syllable poem about nature, with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third. Haiku is a zen art that expresses an intimate moment of present experience. No unneccesary words are required and the use of metaphors is discouraged. Here is an example:

Thirteen Books Exhibit in Library

Thirteen Books, an exhibit featuring books from the Art 384 students, will be on display in the library grand corridor until January 24.

Are you tired of lugging a backpack full of books around? Is taking the stairs taking a toll on you?

We have lockers available for students to rent, in the lower level of the library, as well as on the 5th floor. The charge is $10 per semester.

Stop at the Circulation Desk to rent your locker. During the elevator replacement project we are predicting that most students will want to rent the lockers on the library's lower level.

Library displays highlight the 20th anniversary of the ADA

Join us as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The main exhibit case in the library showcases a 4-part exhibit featuring materials from Katherine Schneider and McIntyre Library. The exhibit includes materials on access, the lived experience, work, and resources.

The IMC display includes the American Library Association's Schneider Family Book awards for child and teen books about the disability experience, as well as a bibliography of recommended children's books.

Google Scholar now links to McIntyre Library articles

In ongoing efforts to make your research easier, McIntyre Library now provides access to some of its resources through Google Scholar. Run a search in Google Scholar, and results that are available in McIntyre Library will display a link to library holdings. Searches run from computers on campus will provide the McIntyre Library availability link automatically. If you are searching from off campus, you must log into Google Scholar (this requires a Google account), click on "scholar preferences," and select up to three libraries for which you'd like availability information displayed. (Please note that this convenient search option will not provide access to all 200+ library databases)

Check out the popular reading titles on display in the library. The new acquisitions shelf near the entrance is the place to look for your summer reading materials, new DVDs, etc.

Toothpick Holders on Display in Library Entrance

Marvin Larson, a UW-Eau Claire alumni, has donated a collection of over 450 toothpick holders to the university. Check out the exhibit case in the library and enjoy examples of the many colors and glass designs, the animal-themed holders, and those collected while traveling.

McIntyre Library Honors Student Workers

McIntyre Library could not run without our student assistants. John Pollitz, library director, thanked the graduating students at a reception held in their honor. Books were donated to the library collection in recognition of the work each of the students does for us.

Bean Bag Chairs and Civility

People sleeping on bean bag chairs in the book stacks has become a problem. See my response to a student's suggestion at the McIntyre Library Suggestion Box Blog.

Sleeping in the stacks keeps other students from getting to the books they need and keeps our student workers from doing their jobs.

Be considerate, think of others not just yourself and find somewhere else to take a nap on a bean bag. There are plenty of other cozy places in the library to take a bean bag chair. If this continues to be a problem next year we will have to reevaluate having bean bag chairs. They seem very popular but they cannot be used in a way the keeps other students from getting the books they need.

Students who study in McIntyre Library during the wee hours of the morning during finals week will find FREE coffee after Library Grounds closes, from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday night thru Thursday night, May 16-20.

The free coffee is sponsored by Sodexho and the library. Be green and bring your own cup.

McIntyre staff predict that you will enjoy the fortune cookies available during finals week. We wish you good fortune on those exams.

to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 21.

Take a break in your studies to make the next move in an ongoing chess game in the Library. Find the game near the elevators on the 1st floor. A marker indicates whose move it is (black pieces or white pieces). Make a move, change the marker, and check back later to see how your color is doing. English Fest this week

Films on Demand -- now available through McIntyre Library

Films on Demand is a subscription service providing online streamed access to thousands of academic films, and it is now available to all UWEC students, faculty and staff through McIntyre Library!

Text a call number: making your cell phone even more indispensable!

You search the library catalog for that book you need, jot down the call number on a piece of scrap paper...and then lose it.

No more! McIntyre Library has added a new feature to its catalog that lets you text a title, call number and library location to your cell phone. Just search that catalog as usual, click on the "Text this location, call number, and title to your cell phone" link near the call number, and enter your cell phone number. You'll receive a text message with the information you need to find the library item. How cool is that?

(You will be responsible for any charges or fees levied by your service provider for receiving the incoming text message.)

Required purchase texts now available in the Library

The Library is now purchasing copies of all books that are required readings for classes but not part of the textbook rental program. The books are available on Library Reserve and can be checked out for 3 days.

The Library is doing this in keeping with the Faculty Handbook, which states "If a faculty member requires the use of a book not provided through the Instructional Resource Rental Department, copies of the book must be available in the Library for general use." (Chapter 7, page 6)

Second, buying books assigned for classroom readings logically fits directly into the Library mission to support the University’s curriculum.

Finally, perhaps most importantly, it is one way the Library can help address the high cost of textbooks. While we are not suggesting that students avoid purchasing books, we believe that this service expands students’ range of choices in tough economic times. Research has shown that students believe that this is a role that libraries can play in helping them face textbook affordability.

While we haven’t yet received all of our purchased texts we have quite a few available on reserve. (Some exclusions, such as lab manuals, apply)

Scholarly recommender service -- try it out!

The University of Wisconsin System libraries are running a trial of a new service that provides researchers with suggestions based on their area of interest. This will aid you in finding additional relevant articles. It is similar to the “More Like This” or “If You Liked This, You’ll Also Like …” services on consumer web sites such as Amazon, but it is based on article usage of thousands of people at research institutions around the world.

This trial runs through March 2010.

To try the service, simply use the FIND IT button as usual and look for the "Users interested in this article also expressed an interest in the following" section.

Perform a search via our Quick Search or a database and find an article relevant to your research. Then click on the Find It! button to see if your library has access to the article.
To see recommendations, scroll down to the section labeled “Users interested in this article also expressed an interest in the following." You will find additional articles that may be of interest, based on the usage of other researchers that looked at the original article. You can click on the buttons to the right of the citations to see if we have access to the additional articles.


What if nothing is recommended?

The recommendations section will not always show up. This is still a relatively new service and not every article will have recommendations.

What about my privacy?

The recommendation engine is powered by anonymous usage data from people using the Find It! system at other participating libraries. For our trial subscription, UWEC clickthrough data is not sent to the software vendor.

LAST DAY Secret Post: A Community Art Project

Do you have a secret? If so, you're in luck.

Beginning January 25, 2010 and running through March 12, 2010, Eau Claire community Artists and Educators from greater Eau Claire and University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire invite Eau Claire community members and UWEC students, staff and faculty to share their secrets.

Based upon the Post Secret™ concept (http://postsecret.com), participants will be asked to design and submit postcards with a secret on them for a community art project called Secret Post. During the month of April 2010, Secret Post will be displayed at the McIntyre Library, Haas Fine Arts Center and the Eau Claire Regional Arts Center.

Mind and Body Workout Room Update

We have now added a Stairmaster treadmill to the Mind & Body workout room. The treadmill is located in room 2024 just off the 2nd floor breezeway.

Thank you to all the students and staff who have made comments about the room and signed in on our use survey sheet. Based on the use we have seen and your positive comments we plan to keep the room open for the foreseeable future.

New Response to the Library Suggestion Box

Today I received a request to place trash cans in the group study rooms. Please see the The Library Suggestion Blog for my response.

Also, last week we had a suggestion to place a lamp on the puzzle table. We now have a lamp on that table to help out you puzzlers.

New Exercise Room in McIntyre Library

Here at McIntyre Library we are not only concerned with building strong minds but we are now offering a way for students, faculty and staff to develop strong bodies also! In collaboration with the Crest Fitness Center we have established the "Mind and Body Fitness" room on the second floor of McIntyre Library (rm L2025). This room will allow everyone to take a little break from their busy work day or study time to get their heart rate up and take care of their bodies while relieving the stress of a very busy schedule. We have a stationary bike and an elliptical trainer in the room. The bike has a tray so that you can keep reading or studying while you get some aerobic exercise. This is a test project to see if a library has a role to play in an overall campus wellness program. The room will remain open during library hours and will operate on a first come first serve basis.

Student Center Plans Available in McIntyre Library

A copy of the environmental impact statement for the proposed new student center is available in McIntyre Library's course reserve collection. It can be checked out at our circulation desk on the first floor by the main entrance to the library.

E-Reserve and Voyager Catalog have been fixed--thank you for your patience

Laptop & Room Scheduling Problems Persist

Online scheduling of group study rooms and equipment (laptops, cameras, etc.) is currently not available.

The library catalog and related services are undergoing a transformation. We are currently working on the new catalog. There will be changes happening as we mold the catalog to better serve our users.
